Status symbol?

Some very interesting thoughts over at Leggo Blog, written by… er, actually I’m not sure. No matter…

I’ve tried to think back to my own youth to attempt to compare the current situation with ours back then. I can remember lads who carried knives. But I can’t think of a single situation where one was actually used in anger. They were usually mere status symbols…

We had some weaponry but we really didn’t want to have to use it. We weren’t really up for maiming and killing people, not even our sworn enemies from rival schools deserved death.

Are knives still seen as status symbols on the street? Or simply as weapons?
